  • Employer: Financial Conduct Authority
  • Salary: Competitive
  • Working hours: Full-time
  • Location: London, Canary Wharf
  • Job Description:

Since April 2013 the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has had a unique mandate to promote effective competition in the financial services sector. And following recent legislative changes, from April 2015 it will also have power to enforce the anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominance and markets provisions of the Competition and Enterprise Acts.
The FCA is recruiting competition economists to both its Competition and Chief Economist’s Departments to drive this agenda forwards. These roles provide an exciting opportunity to help shape how the FCA approaches and delivers on its competition mandate. The outputs of the competition work you would undertake would have significant impact on the FCA and a profound impact on markets and many people's lives.

As a competition economist in either the Competition or Chief Economist’s Department, you will focus on the economic analysis of competition issues in any of the retail or wholesale financial markets regulated by the FCA, including in the regulation of payment systems.

Opportunities are at two different levels, Associate and Technical Specialist. Both are challenging and varied roles requiring the application of economic thinking and techniques to generate robust conclusions. They require good judgement and the confidence, discipline and intellectual ability to deliver in a demanding environment.

Successful candidates for the Technical Specialist roles would need to show significant experience in the delivery of analytical projects and the capability to lead team members and to speak for the organisation externally. Successful candidates for both Technical Specialist and Associate roles would need excellent analytical skills and knowledge of the economics of industrial organisation.

The role offers an attractive package of salary and benefits, and extensive development opportunities in applied economics, financial services and broader professional skills.
